Mental Health in the War on Terror PDF
By:Neil Krishan Aggarwal
Published on 2015-01-13 by Columbia University Press

Neil Krishan Aggarwal's timely study finds that mental-health and biomedical professionals have created new forms of knowledge and practice in their desire to understand and fight terrorism. In the process, the state has used psychiatrists and psychologists to furnish knowledge on undesirable populations, and psychiatrists and psychologists have protected state interests. Professional interpretation, like all interpretations, is subject to cultural forces. Drawing on cultural psychiatry and medical anthropology, Aggarwal analyzes the transformation of definitions for normal and abnormal behavior in a vast array of sources: government documents, professional bioethical debates, legal motions and opinions, psychiatric and psychological scholarship, media publications, and policy briefs. Critical themes emerge on the use of mental health in awarding or denying disability to returning veterans, characterizing the confinement of Guantánamo detainees, contextualizing the actions of suicide bombers, portraying Muslim and Arab populations in psychiatric and psychological scholarship, illustrating bioethical issues in the treatment of detainees, and supplying the knowledge and practice to deradicalize terrorists. Throughout, Aggarwal explores this fascinating, troublesome transformation of mental-health science into a potential instrument of counterterrorism.

The Social Determinants of Mental Health PDF
By:Michael T. Compton,Ruth S. Shim
Published on 2015-04-01 by American Psychiatric Pub

The Social Determinants of Mental Health aims to fill the gap that exists in the psychiatric, scholarly, and policy-related literature on the social determinants of mental health: those factors stemming from where we learn, play, live, work, and age that impact our overall mental health and well-being. The editors and an impressive roster of chapter authors from diverse scholarly backgrounds provide detailed information on topics such as discrimination and social exclusion; adverse early life experiences; poor education; unemployment, underemployment, and job insecurity; income inequality, poverty, and neighborhood deprivation; food insecurity; poor housing quality and housing instability; adverse features of the built environment; and poor access to mental health care. This thought-provoking book offers many beneficial features for clinicians and public health professionals: Clinical vignettes are included, designed to make the content accessible to readers who are primarily clinicians and also to demonstrate the practical, individual-level applicability of the subject matter for those who typically work at the public health, population, and/or policy level. Policy implications are discussed throughout, designed to make the content accessible to readers who work primarily at the public health or population level and also to demonstrate the policy relevance of the subject matter for those who typically work at the clinical level. All chapters include five to six key points that focus on the most important content, helping to both prepare the reader with a brief overview of the chapter's main points and reinforce the |take-away| messages afterward. In addition to the main body of the book, which focuses on selected individual social determinants of mental health, the volume includes an in-depth overview that summarizes the editors' and their colleagues' conceptualization, as well as a final chapter coauthored by Dr. David Satcher, 16th Surgeon General of the United States, that serves as a |Call to Action,| offering specific actions that can be taken by both clinicians and policymakers to address the social determinants of mental health. The editors have succeeded in the difficult task of balancing the individual/clinical/patient perspective and the population/public health/community point of view, while underscoring the need for both groups to work in a unified way to address the inequities in twenty-first century America. The Social Determinants of Mental Health gives readers the tools to understand and act to improve mental health and reduce risk for mental illnesses for individuals and communities. Students preparing for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) will also benefit from this book, as the MCAT in 2015 will test applicants' knowledge of social determinants of health. The social determinants of mental health are not distinct from the social determinants of physical health, although they deserve special emphasis given the prevalence and burden of poor mental health.

Mental Health and Development PDF
By:Natalie Drew,Edwige Faydi,Melvyn Freeman,Michelle Funk,World Health Organization
Published on 2010 by World Health Organization

People with mental health conditions have been excluded from the development agenda despite being a marginalized and vulnerable group in countries all over the world. This report highlights the urgent need to redress this situation. It presents compelling evidence that people with mental health conditions meet major criteria for vulnerability and yet fall through the cracks of development aid and government attention. It makes the case for reaching out to this vulnerable group through the design and implementation of appropriate policies and programmes and through the inclusion of mental health interventions into broader poverty reduction and development strategies. It also describes a number of key interventions which can provide a starting point for these efforts. This report is a call to action to all development stakeholders - multilateral agencies, bilateral agencies, global partnerships, private foundations, academic and research institutions, governments and civil society - to focus their attention on mental health. By investing in people with mental health conditions, development outcomes can be improved.

Probiotics in Mental Health PDF
By:Colin R. Martin,Derek Larkin
Published on 2018-05-30 by CRC Press

The concept that the gut and brain are intricately linked is widely accepted not just within the lay community but increasingly within scientific and therapeutic circles as well. Terms such as |heartache| and |gut wrenching| are more than mere metaphor, they represent key fundamental aspects of human experience which all individuals will invariably endure from time to time. The relationship between the gut and brain is complex but fundamental to health and wellbeing. Increasing and compelling evidence supports the existence of a relationship between the health and status of the gut and the manifestation of significant psychopathology. Uniquely within the field of mental health and psychiatry, the role of gut flora and probiotics in both the understanding and treatment of mental illness represents an emerging science whether the potential for therapeutic intervention, through the use of probiotics, offers an opportunity to determine efficacy within a coherent evidence-based model of both action and pathology or, moreover, offers interventions that are comparatively benign compared to the side-effect profile associated with most drugs used to treat mental illness. Probiotics in Mental Health examines the role of probiotics in a range of clinical presentations associated with significant psychopathology and facilitates a reconsideration of how mental illness may be conceptualised within a coherent gut-brain model of health and wellbeing. Under the rubric of enhancing wellbeing rather than dwelling on illness and disease, this exciting new volume not only comprises the latest evidence in the field but also advocates an approach characterised by the understanding of mental disorder within an evidence-based model and the pursuit of mental health and wellbeing through the most benign of interventions.

Mental Health Services Today and Tomorrow: Perspective on policy and practice PDF
By:Charles Kaye,Michael Howlett
Published on 2008 by Radcliffe Publishing

This work traces and anticipates past, present and future changes in mental health services to assess the impact both of developments in care, and of the implications of new organisational change. It includes contributions and perspectives of those involved in services at all levels, including service users, to draw upon their experience to give a fuller picture of today and help sketch in tomorrow. It balances academic scrutiny with personal involvement, to reflect both national trends and local initiatives. Overall this work is in two volumes, each of which can stand alone: the companion book Part 1 focuses on the realities of offering and receiving care at a practical and local level; this Part 2 reviews policy and practice from national and international perspectives. Together these books provide essential information and views on mental health services for professionals throughout health and social care, managers, policy planners and policy shapers including those in the third sector and patient groups, academics and the media.

The Future of Mental Health PDF
By:Eric Maisel
Published on 2017-07-05 by Routledge

The Future of Mental Health drills to the heart of the current mental health crisis, where hundreds of millions of individuals worldwide receive unwarranted |mental disorder diagnoses.| It paints a picture of how mental health providers can improve their practices to better serve individuals in distress and outlines necessary steps for a mental health revolution. Eric Maisel's goal is to inject more human interaction into the therapeutic process.Maisel powerfully deconstructs the |mental disorder| paradigm that is the foundation of current mental health practices. The author presents a revolutionary alternative, a |human experience| paradigm. He sheds a bright light on the differences between so-called |psychiatric medication| and mere chemicals with powerful effects, explains why the DSM-5 is silent on causes, silent on treatment, and wedded to illegitimate |symptom pictures.| Maisel describes powerful helping alternatives like communities of care, and explains why one day |human experience specialists| may replace current mental health professionals. An important book for both service providers and service users, The Future of Mental Health brilliantly unmasks current mental health practices and goes an important step further: it describes what we are obliged to do in order to secure better mental health services?and better mental health?for everyone.

With relatable clinical vignettes that illustrate the applicability of each chapter’s content, as well as key chapter points that summarize major themes, Marijuana and Mental Health is the definitive, single source of comprehensive information on marijuana and mental health in modern American society. Balanced, focused, and highly readable, chapters address topics such as the effects of marijuana on the brain and mind, marijuana-related policy and legislation, the complex link between marijuana use and psychotic disorders, synthetic cannabinoids, and the treatment and prevention of marijuana misuse. Beyond offering clinical and research psychiatrists, psychiatric residents and fellows, clinical psychologists, and psychiatric nurses a comprehensive but concise compilation of research in this area, this reference informs clinical mental health practice as well as policy decisions by articulating the connection between marijuana and mental health, particularly in the United States.

Published on 2006 by Nova Publishers

This book originates in the work of a Socrates European partnership on mental health promotion. The project involved partners from four European countries (the United Kingdom, Italy, Portugal and Ireland) and led to the development of a European Module on mental health promotion in each country, teaching exchanges and a series of conferences in the UK (2001), Ireland (2002) and Italy (2003). However, this book moves beyond the publication of conference proceedings to provide a broader debate on responses to mental distress that promote inclusion, citizenship (as expression of meaningful participation in the community) and a genuine alternative to institutional thinking and practices.
