Published on 2004-06-28 by NYU Press

Choice Outstanding Academic Title 2003 Personal rights, such as the right to procreate—or not—and the right to die generate endless debate. This book maps out the legal, political, and ethical issues swirling around personal rights. Howard Ball shows how the Supreme Court has grappled with the right to reproduce and to abort, and takes on the issue of auto-euthanasia and assisted suicide, from Karen Ann Quinlan through Kevorkian and just recently to the Florida case of the woman who was paralyzed by a gunshot from her mother and who had the plug pulled on herself. For the last half of the twentieth century, the justices of the Supreme Court have had to wrestle with new and difficult life and death questions for them as well as for doctors and their patients, medical ethicists, sociologists, medical practitioners, clergy, philosophers, law makers, and judges. The Supreme Court in the Intimate Lives of Americans offers a look at these issues as they emerged and examines the manner in which the men and women of the U.S. Supreme Court addressed them.

Published on 2016 by Knopf

In a deeply personal and moving book, the beloved NPR radio host speaks out about the long drawn-out death (from Parkinson's) of her husband of fifty-four years, and of her struggle to reconstruct her life without him. With John gone, Diane was indeed |on her own,| coping with the inevitable practical issues and, more important, with the profoundly emotional ones. What to do, how to react, reaching out again into the world--struggling to create a new reality for herself while clinging to memories of the past. Her focus is on her own roller-coaster experiences, but she has also solicited the moving stories of such recently widowed friends as Roger Mudd and Susan Stamberg, which work to expose the reader to a remarkable range of reactions to the death of a spouse. John's unnecessarily extended death--he begged to be helped to die--culminated in his taking matters into his own hands, simply refusing to take water, food, and medication. His heroic actions spurred Diane into becoming a kind of poster person for the |right to die| movement that is all too slowly taking shape in our country. With the brave determination that has characterized her whole life, she is finding a meaningful new way to contribute to the world. Her book--as practical as it is inspiring--will be a help and a comfort to the recently bereaved, and a beacon of hope about the possibilities that remain to us as we deal with our own approaching mortality.

Textbook of Men's Mental Health PDF
By:Jon E. Grant,Marc N. Potenza
Published on 2007-04-02 by American Psychiatric Pub

The first of its kind, this book reflects progress in a too-little explored corner of psychiatry to show that gender plays an integral role in mental health issues for men. Textbook of Men's Mental Health provides clinicians with the information they need for understanding how certain disorders manifest differently in men -- and for recognizing how treatment responses in men differ from those in women. Multidisciplinary coverage in this groundbreaking guide draws from fields such as public health and substance abuse to create a well-rounded approach to addressing men's specific mental health problems. With contributions by today's experts in men's mental health, this work gathers the latest research about men's psychiatric issues, from the difficulties in diagnosing male depression to strategies for engaging men in marital therapy. First addressing developmental issues specific to childhood, adolescence, and old age, the text then presents treatment options for an array of problems, from anxiety to sexual disorders to posttraumatic stress disorder. This volume then addresses psychosocial issues as they apply uniquely to men, such as fathering, marriage, aggression, and overcoming the stigma of mental health treatment -- as well as a chapter on how men's ethnicity influences the effectiveness of therapy. Among the topics discussed are how men behave in intimate relationships with women -- and the mental health considerations unique to gay men psychiatric disorders more prevalent in men than women, such as substance abuse, antisocial personality, and conduct disorder up-to-date facts on male sexual functioning, covering erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, and male orgasmic disorder why disorders less common in men -- anxiety, depression, PTSD -- require different treatment than for women coverage of compulsive disorders seen in men both more frequently, such as pathological gambling and compulsive sexual behavior -- and less frequently, such as kleptomania and compulsive buying insight into how body image, a problem usually associated with women, has become a serious health issue for men, as evidenced by eating disorders, muscle dysmorphia, and steroid abuse No previous text has addressed such a wide range of issues concerning men's mental health, presented here in evidence-based coverage featuring case vignettes, key points, practice guidelines, and an extensive reference list in each chapter. Clinicians who wish to make more prudent decisions regarding the care of men with mental health issues will find this text indispensable to their practice -- and to the well-being of their male patients.

The Palgrave Handbook of Adult Mental Health PDF
By:Michelle O'Reilly,Jessica Nina Lester
Published on 2016-04-08 by Springer

This Handbook gathers together empirical and theoretical chapters from leading scholars and clinicians to examine the broad issue of adult mental health. The contributors draw upon data from a variety of contexts to illustrate the multiple ways in which language as action can assist us in better understanding the discursive practices that surround adult mental health. Conversation and discourse analysis are useful, related approaches for the study of mental health conditions, particularly when underpinned by a social constructionist framework. In the field of mental health, the use of these two approaches is growing, with emergent implications for adults with mental health conditions, their practitioners, and/or their families. Divided into four parts; Reconceptualising Mental Health and Illness; Naming, Labelling and Diagnosing; The Discursive Practice of Psychiatry; and Therapy and Interventions; this Handbook provides a comprehensive overview of current debates regarding adult mental health.

Deployment Psychology PDF
By:Amy B. Adler
Published on 2011 by Amer Psychological Assn

The impact of combat on service members' mental health has received considerable attention both in the popular press and in scholarly publications. Yet few books have focused on evidence-based efforts to prevent mental health problems and enhance service members' well-being and resilience. In this book, leading clinicians and researchers do just that by examining how military organizations can best moderate the negative impact of combat through individual screening, training, peer support, leadership, and organizational policies. The editors promote a broad occupational health model of prevention and include the latest research on delivering mental health services in predeployment, in-theater settings, and VA hospitals. The psychological health not only of service members but also of military families is approached as an integral aspect of deployment psychology. The result is a groundbreaking book that emphasizes what is knownùand not knownùabout evidence-based interventions. It represents the first comprehensive review of mental health interventions across the deployment cycle and will help guide the field of military psychology in developing a much-needed support system for service members.
